Viltrox announces its first Micro Four Thirds autofocus lens: the 35mm f/1.7 Air. Announcement event on July 15 with $180-200 expected pricing.

Viltrox Is Bringing Its 35mm f/1.7 Air to Micro Four Thirds — And It's Happening Tomorrow

If you've been waiting for Viltrox to finally show up in Micro Four Thirds, the wait is almost over.

Viltrox has a product announcement event scheduled for July 15, and 43rumors is reporting that the MFT mount version of the popular Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.7 Air lens will be the headline. The same lens has been available for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Fujifilm X mounts since late 2024, and this would be Viltrox's first native MFT optic.

The 35mm f/1.7 Air has become a cult favorite in the other mounts because of one thing: it's tiny and it's cheap. The E-mount version weighs 170 grams, the barrel is 56mm long, and the street price is around $180. The MFT version, if Viltrox keeps the same pricing strategy, will land in the $160-200 range, which would make it one of the most affordable autofocus fast-normal primes for the system.

What the MFT version gets you in equivalent field of view: 70mm. On a Micro Four Thirds body like my GH7 or an OM System OM-1 Mark II, this becomes a 70mm equivalent — squarely in the portrait-and-everyday-carry zone. f/1.7 on a MFT body gives you depth-of-field equivalent to roughly f/3.4 on full frame, which is enough subject separation for portraits but not so shallow that focus becomes a nightmare. For street and travel photographers, this is the sweet spot.

The 35mm f/1.7 Air in other mounts has been well-reviewed. DPReview's spec page lists the optical formula as 11 elements in 9 groups with 1 ED and 1 aspherical element, a minimum focus distance of 0.34m, and a 56mm front filter thread. Photofocus called the E-mount version "an affordable prime lens aimed at photographers who want a fast aperture in a lightweight, budget-friendly package." On APS-C, it's a 53mm equivalent and works as a standard prime.

Why MFT matters here: the MFT system has been crying out for affordable third-party autofocus glass for years. Panasonic and OM System both sell their own f/1.7-1.8 primes, but they start at $400-500. Viltrox at $180 would be a third of the price. For someone getting into an OM-1 II or a GH7 on a budget, the lens lineup has been the biggest friction point — and Viltrox is one of the few third parties with the engineering capability to build native MFT AF (Sigma and Tamron have largely ignored the mount).

If the announcement goes as rumored, the MFT 35mm f/1.7 Air will be the first of what 43rumors expects to be "more lenses later." Viltrox has been expanding its product line aggressively through 2025 and 2026, and the MFT mount entry is a logical next step given the user base for Panasonic GH and OM System bodies.

Tomorrow's announcement should also include pricing and a ship date. If you shoot MFT, this is the lens release to actually pay attention to.
