OMDS warns that some OM System PEN pre-orders won’t ship until spring 2027. Here’s what the official statement says, and what to do if you’re waiting on one.

OM System PEN Pre-Orders Are Already Backing Up — Some Won't Ship Until Spring 2027

Twelve days. That's how long OM Digital Solutions gave the OM System PEN before its home market started running short.

The PEN — the first camera to wear the PEN name since Olympus sold its imaging division — officially goes on sale in Japan on October 30, 2026. Per a corporate statement OMDS issued this week, the company has now told Japanese customers that a meaningful slice of pre-orders won't actually land until "spring 2027 or later." Both the black and silver bodies are affected, along with the new M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 III kit lens and the BLS-7 battery.

It's one of those launches where the news is good for the brand and bad for anyone who wanted one.

What OMDS actually said

The original Japanese statement was machine-translated and posted by 43 Rumors over the weekend. PetaPixel picked it up on October 12, and Digital Camera World ran a piece the same day. The line that matters is the apology clause:

"We offer our deepest apologies to customers waiting for their products and to all affected parties for the inconvenience caused. [...] We have received a substantial volume of pre-orders for the 'OM SYSTEM PEN,' and as a result, we anticipate that it will take a considerable amount of time to deliver the products, even for customers who have already placed reservations."

In plain English: pre-orders beat OMDS's own sales projections — by enough that even pre-order slot #1 isn't guaranteed to ship on day one. Some color × kit × accessory combinations are slipping into March, April, or beyond.

Why this isn't the usual launch crunch

Supply chains are tight across the industry, but that's not the whole story. The OM System PEN is a $999 MFT body — a fairly traditional launch slot, not a halo product with constrained exotic parts. OM System built a deliberately compact, rangefinder-style body with a 20MP sensor, a flip screen, 5-axis IBIS to 5.5 stops, and computational modes borrowed from the OM-1. The PEN isn't hard to *build*. It's just hard to *build enough of, fast enough.*

Reviews this cycle, including PetaPixel's own take, land on the same note: this is the dial-forward, take-anywhere body the category has been begging for since the Pen-F got discontinued five years ago. When OMDS reissued the PEN name under the OM System banner in September, the street audience was already pre-loaded.

The Fujifilm X100VI parallel, with caveats

Hard not to draw the line to the X100VI saga — supply stretched for over two years before Fujifilm got stock back to normal. The PEN isn't going to be that bad. It's $999 against the X100VI's $1,799 MSRP, the MFT lens ecosystem is wider, and OM System isn't chasing the same fixed-lens viral wave. But the structural problem is identical: when a brand with cult-leanings launches a product that laps its own internal forecast, you get "pre-order for spring 2027," not a normal launch.

A few things I'd watch over the next 30 days: whether the US pre-order window (currently showing an October 14 ship date on Amazon US) holds or slips; whether OMDS adds another production shift the way Fujifilm did when X100VI demand didn't fade; whether third-party MFT lens makers — Sigma, Panasonic, Viltrox — quietly get more retail room as some buyers reach for the OM-5 II or a used Pen-F instead of waiting.

What I'd actually do

If you ordered an OM System PEN expecting it before November, read the OMDS statement before assuming your slot is safe. If you're flexible, the OM-5 II is on shelves now at the same body-only price and pairs with the exact same lens ecosystem. The PEN's dials and physical profile look nicer on a desk, but the OM-5 II ships today.

I haven't handled the new PEN myself, so I can't speak to how the dials feel under a thumb. Based on what reviewers like Keith Wee and the PetaPixel team have shown, this is a reissue that takes the Pen-F ethos seriously rather than just slapping the badge on a generic body. Whether that justifies waiting an extra six months depends on how attached you are to physical dials over menu buttons.

For OM System, this is the best kind of problem. For customers, the worst kind of patience test.
