DJI's Matrice 5TD appears on a Chinese civil drone registry at 2.6 kg empty, 3.05 kg MTOW — 750 g heavier than the 4TD. Leaked photos hint at integrated LiDAR and RTK.

What the China filing actually says

A registration entry on China's civil drone platform now lists the next DJI enterprise thermal aircraft as the Matrice 5TD, model code M5TD. The filing, posted by leaker Igor Bogdanov on September 21 and amplified by DroneXL on September 27https://dronexl.co/2026/09/27/dji-matrice-5td-china-registration-leak-750g-heavier-matrice-4td, puts the empty weight at 2.6 kg (5.7 lb) and maximum takeoff weight at 3.05 kg (6.7 lb). That places the airframe in China's "light" category for power line patrol and oil pipeline inspection — the same band the current Matrice 4TD sits in, just 750 g heavier than its predecessor.

DJI has not commented. The entry leaves the serial number and production date blank, which means either the aircraft described in the form had not been built when it was filed, or the screenshot was taken before those fields were completed. Either way, the name Matrice 5TD is now on a public government record rather than just on a leaker's render.

What changed in the airframe

The Matrice 4TD — the thermal, dock-based version that lives in DJI's Dock 3 — weighs 1,850 g with battery and tops out at 2,090 g MTOW. The 5TD registration puts 750 g on the airframe and 960 g on the takeoff limit over the 4TD. That is a meaningful jump, and the prototypes Bogdanov has been posting since July suggest where the mass is going: a dome on the top deck consistent with integrated LiDAR, and a cylinder consistent with a built-in RTK antenna. Both are options DJI sells today as external add-ons for the Matrice 4 series.

Pulling LiDAR and RTK inside the airframe is the kind of change an inspection crew wants closest to a power line. Fewer accessories means fewer mounting points to weather-seal, fewer calibration steps between flights, and one fewer thing to leave on a truck roof. Whether that comes at the cost of flight time is not in the registration — nothing in the entry lists endurance. The 4TD launched with Dock 3 on February 27, 2025 at 54 minutes of forward flight, and a heavier airframe running the same battery class does not fly longer on its own.

Dock 4 enters the picture

Bogdanov's September 25 post went further than the renders. He wrote that there will be a DJI Dock 4 and that it will be used in stores soon — phrasing that hints at retail or commercial deployment rather than field rollout. He has not named a source for the dock claim. Separately, DJI's own enterprise support chatbot now offers Matrice 5 as an example model when asking customers which drone they own. A language model filling in a sample answer is weaker evidence than a product page, but it does line up with the registration record.

For US operators, the dock is the part that matters most. Dock 3 and the Matrice 4TD cleared the FCC before the December 22, 2025 Covered List action blocked new authorizations for DJI hardware. A Dock 4 and a Matrice 5TD have no such grant, and none can be issued while the designation stands. Every police department and utility that standardized on Dock 3 since February 2025 just found out where the upgrade path stops at the US border — they will keep flying 2025-vintage aircraft while European and Asian departments drop a heavier, better-sensed successor into a Dock 4.

What still has to happen before launch

The Matrice 5TD is, as of this filing, an unannounced product. A name on a Chinese regulator's website is closer to launch than a render, but it is not the same as a DJI press release, an FCC filing, or a price. The Matrice 4D and 4TD launched with Dock 3 in late February 2025 after roughly two months of pre-announcement chatter. If the 5TD follows that window, a Q4 2026 reveal is plausible — speculation, not fact, but the timing lines up with the July prototype photos and the September registration.

Until DJI confirms specifications, sensor payloads, pricing, and dock compatibility, the only numbers on the public record are the ones in the China filing: M5TD, 2.6 kg empty, 3.05 kg MTOW, light category, SZ DJI Technology Co. as manufacturer. That is enough to know a successor is coming. It is not enough to know whether it is worth waiting for if you already run a Dock 3 fleet.
