Cooke has taken its S4/i Super 35 primes — the "Cooke look" set that has lived on Hollywood sets for decades — and rebuilt them for full-frame. The new S4 FF/i series is six T2.0 primes covering 18, 25, 35, 50, 75 and 100mm, in PL or LPL mount, with an average close focus of 385mm across the set and Cooke's /i metadata. Per Digital Camera World, they're up for preorder at $15,000 each, 87mm fronts, 1.45 to 1.8kg per lens — about 29% lighter than the S4/i originals.
I've never shot a frame on Cooke glass, and at $15,000 a lens I likely never will — this is rental-house territory. But a full-frame S4 that focuses to fifteen inches is exactly the set I'd point at when someone asks why cinema lenses cost what they do: character is engineered, not accidental.
